The Potbelly Sandwich Shop, an international chain restaurant, known for delicious, nutritious submarine sandwiches and soups, started from humble beginnings. In 1977, Potbelly started in a small antique store on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. By 2005, Potbelly had over 100 shops open nationally and was named one of "America's 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies" by Inc. Magazine. By their 30th anniversary, they opened their 200th store and was eighth on the list of Crain's Business "50 Fastest Growing Companies". Not only does the chain "help people eat right, without giving up the things they love", part of their mission includes their commitment to promote green initiatives and giving back to local communities.
Bullying, fighting and aggression, shooting and bomb threats - practically every night our newscasts reflect the chaos of our schools. We have to do better at protecting our children from threats within the school's walls and outsiders who trespass on our campuses. Some state governments, like those in Texas and Ohio, are stepping in to make security and surveillance a priority for their school's agendas.

Security is an issue that touches employees in all positions, at every level of an organization. Consider the Human Resources department of a successful retail chain with kiosks and mall stores. The importance of security in such a store is obvious - to keep an eye on high traffic situations, shoplifters and theft. What isn't so obvious is the role that video surveillance plays in coaching employees and reviewing their performance on the job.
From early spring until late fall, hunters comb the forested areas of the Midwest in search of game, while target and sports shooting are popular at ranges all year long. To accommodate these sportsmen, a new firearms/sports retail store has opened north of Cincinnati, Ohio called Country Attic Treasures. Although Country Attic Treasures has been in business for almost 30 years, new owner, Scott Ready, has moved the business and has opened this new store. Country Attic Treasures sells a wide range of firearms and ammunition plus clothing, books and supplies, common to any retail establishment. What sets it apart is its unique décor featuring an authentic stagecoach, placed in the center of the store.
We continue to see quick service restaurants and small box retail stores experiment with the inexpensive lines of cameras and video surveillance equipment that are flooding the market. What looks good on day one of installation, falters or fails six months later. Most of these systems come with a one- or two-year warranty, but the owner has to uninstall the camera on the server and ship it elsewhere for repair or replacement. After two to three weeks, the camera is returned and has to be reinstalled.
